Street Photography

When I did the “100 Strangers in One Day” challenge, I discovered that the people we meet or see as we walk down the street, are in the middle of their own lives. They have things they are trying to accomplish whether they are shopping, walking with a loved one (or their vacuum- photo of the red Dirt Devil is below), or just sitting at their favorite coffee shop – they are all doing something.

When I was taking my strangers’ photos, I realized I was simply doing portraits as opposed to street photography. When I realized this, I tried to take step back and take another frame. I wanted to show what some of these people were actually doing when Jenna and I came across them.
 

100 people in one day.

Jenna and I made our goal of approaching 100 strangers and taking their photos.
The morning was frustrating as we both thought Portland would be more lively on a Saturday morning. That was not the case at all. After 37 strangers’ photos and thousands of complaints, whines, and doubts later, we ate lunch at Mother’s with Jenna’s friend, Coralie. Sidenote: the sandwiches and the trifle there are life-changing.
During lunch, as me and Jenna complained some more, Coralie, who is Portland-savvy, told us about Hawthorne. However, the doubts (mine at least) were still festering.
Wrong! Within two hours we made our quota, while it had taken five hours to get our 37 earlier. We could have taken more photos, but come on, after 7 hours of walking, we were tired.

This experience definitely inspired me to approach people I wouldn’t normally approach. There will definitely be another expedition!
